The US has urged China to respect civil liberties in Hong Kong as the territory marks the 20th anniversary of its hand over to Beijing’s rule.    The State Department said the success of Hong Kong, which was given a large degree of autonomy when British colonial rule ended in July 1997, was due to its unique status.  While Washington valued its “excellent cooperation” with Hong Kong’s government, it “remains concerned about any infringements of civil liberties in Hong Kong, including intrusions on press freedoms,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said.  Those concerns were expressed on a day the State Department approved arms sales to Taiwan worth $1.4 billion, the first such deal since President Donald J Trump took office.   The sale will anger China which regards Taiwan as part of its territory   and comes at a time when Washington is engaged in persuading Beijing control its ally, North Korea. : 30th.
