WHY CAESAREAN DELIVERIES IN PRIVATE HOSPITALS ARE INCREASING DAY BY DAY THAN NORMAL DELIVERIES ?

With an aim to put a cap on the increasing rate of C-Section surgeries, the Health Ministry has directed all private hospitals to display the data of deliveries through Caesarean and also normal deliveries in private hospitals empanelled under the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS). The decision of the ministry came against the backdrop of concerns being expressed by the Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi concern to Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda about the unusual increase in C-Section surgeries in the hospitals. Gandhi pointed out that as per the recommendation of the World Health Organisation (WHO) deliveries through C-Section should normally be in the range of 10-15 per cent of the total deliveries; however, the percentage is 54 and 34, respectively, in states like Telangana and Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) was also sounded about the harmful effects of unwarranted C-Sections. Besides, all the states have been directed to carry out periodical prescription audit of the health facilities specifically on this issue. IANS : 18th. July,17
